Editing 101: Why Your Novel Manuscript Needs an Editor

I've heard the story at least a million times: "I'm a great writer. I'll edit my manuscript and save a ton of money!" Then the manuscript comes out, and there they are: Tons of errors that, no matter how good the story is, becomes a major distraction to readers, especially the ones who have an eagle eye for language usage. For better or worse, I am one of those kinds of readers, and if you aren't one, I'm sure you know at least one or two who are. If you want to minimize the total cost of putting your manuscript out there to a willing and ready reader base while at the same time maximizing its continued success, hiring a good editor for your work is an absolute must!

A good novel manuscript editor will:

  • Ensure that your unintended mistakes will not turn off readers or potential publishers

  • Make important contributions to the shape and structure of your novel by showing where additions, deletions, and development may be necessary to round out characters, add meaningful description to setting and scene, and make your story easier to read and understand

  • Make suggestions that will augment your writing without talking over your voice or take control of your unique creative vision (This is a crucial point right here!)

Other ways a good novel manuscript editor can help with your novel manuscript:

● Check for consistency in character and place names, plot points, and descriptions

● Fact check real-world references

● Offer tips and recommendations to meet your goals for the novel

● Offer suggestions to fill in gaps you may need help completing
