What Is An Academic Editor, and Who Needs One?

When writing, either for school, work, or to fulfill your dream of becoming an author, getting your thoughts out on paper is just one step. It’s most certainly an important step — without the writer’s words, there is nothing there.

However, you want your words to come across as you intend them. And, unfortunately, when caught up in the flow of writing, it can be easy to make mistakes.

For example, it takes little to no effort to misspell a word or add in the wrong punctuation when your mind is focused on telling your story or making your point. It can also be easy to overlook those mistakes when you proofread your own work, as your mind might see what you intended to write instead of what you actually wrote.

It’s a very common occurrence and one of the reasons that editors exist. An academic editor looks at your writing with fresh eyes and no bias. Therefore, the editor can see mistakes made and correct them to help enhance your writing.

An academic editor is someone who takes a look at pieces such as academic papers, journals, and books and corrects the following:

  • Grammar and punctuation mistakes

  • Spelling errors

  • Syntax and flow

As an academic editor, my goal is not to change your work — it is to improve it. By fixing errors and ensuring everything flows smoothly, I can help you deliver your message or tell your story with even greater clarity.

If you have a deadline coming up or are ready to introduce your first piece to the world, I’d love to help! And though academic editing is a specialty of mine, I also offer several other services, including help with fiction, resume writing, and more.
